In the late 90s, we lost a young promising entrepreneur, one of the biggest shop owners in the Bola Ige International Market, Gbagi Ibadan Oyo State to the deadly menace of cancer, reports of the death showed that she died as a result of late detection of cancer in her breast, by the time the first breast was surgically removed, it had already eaten to the second breast and after a battle of almost one year, she died. In 2012, the rude shock I’m yet to recover from struck again, a graduate of the University of Ilorin serving with the United Bank of Africa in Lagos had a long battle for life for 2 years before surrendering his life to the cold hands of death after suffering from Blood cancer and diabetes. Late Dele Ajakaye had his immune system so porous that he lost his sight and lived a life full of pain as the blood cancer did a whole lot of damage.

The 2 people I just spoke about were so close to me as they were my first cousins, I was involved in their treatment and the pain of their death, but more painful is the saddest news that ever struck me in recent times, Mrs. Monisola Oluwasimirin woke up to feel strangely and was later diagnosed of cancer, going through surgeries and therapies to revive her, it was in the process of all these that death struck in the late hours of 4th February 2019 just 2 days after her 63rd birthday, the woman in question is my biological mother, a very hardworking woman who laboured to make sure her children got the best in life to the best of her ability but was never allowed to eat the fruit of her labour by the drag headed monster called Cancer. A wound I don’t know when and if it would heal.

Just recently when the whole world was celebrating Christmas on 25th December 2021, I got another jab of the actions of the cold hands of death from another preventable but incurable sickness of High Blood Pressure when the last man standing for me as a parent, my dear dad, Elder Gabriel Olufemi Oluwasimirin died as a result of BP induced complications.

During a random check of some people’s BP when people were coming for condolence visits, what we saw was shocking as there were people with BP as high as 190/100

Amidst the pain I suffered and still suffering from the evils perpetrated by preventable terminal diseases, I have resolved to fight these monsters to a standstill starting with my home state, Ekiti State, Nigeria.

The major factors that cause death from these sicknesses are the timing of detection, accurate diagnosis, and early access to treatment.

The passion to fight the monsters birthed FEMIMONIOLU FOUNDATION, established in honour of my late parents and cousins to help people with tests, screenings for early diagnosis and management through awareness and education, provision of necessary equipment for check up payment of hospital bills among other ways that may be necessary on a case by case note.
